What happens

What happens when the truck comes

A proper clean-out takes about an hour for most homes. Swipe through the steps.

  • Round access cover set in a grass lawn
    Step 1

    Find the lids

The crew finds and opens the tank lids. Buried or tiled-over lids? Tell us when you call.

  • Rear of an orange vacuum tank truck with coiled hoses
    Step 2

    Run the hose

The truck parks as close as it can and runs the hose to the tank. Long driveways need long hoses.

  • White tanker truck parked at the roadside
    Step 3

    Pump it out

Sludge, scum and liquid are pumped out completely, not just the top layer.

  • Exposed pipes in an excavated trench
    Step 4

    Check the parts

With the tank empty, the baffles, inlet, outlet and walls are checked for damage.

  • Drain pipe outlet over wet, muddy ground
    Step 5

    Look at the soakaway

Pooling water or soggy ground over the soakaway means it may need clearing or extending.

How it works

How your septic system works, and why it fills up

Most people in Trinidad and Tobago rely on a septic tank, cesspit or similar on-site system rather than a WASA sewer. Inside the tank, solids sink to the bottom as sludge and grease floats to the top as scum. Only the liquid in the middle should flow on to the soakaway.

  1. 1House drainsToilets, showers, sinks and the washing machine all drain to one pipe.
  2. 2Inlet pipeCarries everything from the house into the tank.
  3. 3Septic tankSolids sink as sludge, grease floats as scum, liquid sits in the middle.
  4. 4Outlet pipeOnly the middle liquid layer should leave the tank.
  5. 5SoakawayA pit or bed of stone that lets the liquid soak into the ground.

Over a few years the sludge and scum build up. Once they take up about a third of the tank, solids start escaping into the soakaway and clog it. That's when you get smells, slow drains and overflows, and why pumping on time is far cheaper than rebuilding a soakaway.

Estimate based on typical sludge build-up per person and pumping when sludge and scum fill about a third of the tank. Real tanks vary with water use, laundry and what goes down the drain.

Warning signs

Signs your septic tank is full

Spot any of these? Don't wait for it to back up into the house.

Bad smells

A sewage smell in the yard, near the lids or coming up the drains.

Slow drains

Sinks, showers and toilets taking longer and longer to go down.

Gurgling pipes

Toilets or drains bubbling and gurgling after you flush or run water.

Pooling water

Wet, soggy ground or standing water over the tank or soakaway.

Extra-green grass

A patch of grass much greener than the rest of the yard.

Backups

Water coming back up the lowest drain in the house. That's urgent.

Questions

Septic tank cleaning in Trinidad: common questions

How does Septic TT work?

Call or WhatsApp us with your area and the problem. We pass your job to an independent septic truck that covers your part of Trinidad, and you get a price before the truck is sent.

How much does septic tank cleaning cost in Trinidad?

It depends on the tank size, how full it is, how far the truck travels and how easy it is to reach the tank. Send your area and a few details on WhatsApp, and you'll get a price before booking.

How often should a septic tank be cleaned?

Most family homes need a pump-out every three to five years. Bigger households and smaller tanks need it more often. The tank checker on this page gives a rough estimate for your home.

Is my house on the sewer or a septic tank?

Most people in Trinidad and Tobago rely on septic tanks, cesspits or other on-site systems rather than a WASA sewer. If you have tank lids or a soakaway in the yard, you're on septic.

What should I do if my septic tank is overflowing?

Stop using water in the house, keep children and pets away from the overflow, don't open the tank yourself, and call or WhatsApp. Overflows get priority.

Which areas of Trinidad do you cover?

Chaguanas, Port of Spain, San Fernando, Arima, Penal, Diego Martin and the towns around them, including Couva, Cunupia, Marabella, Tunapuna and St. Augustine.

Do you clean grease traps for businesses?

Yes. Restaurants, food stalls, bakeries and commercial kitchens can book one-off or regular grease trap cleaning.
