What's the difference between a cesspit and a septic tank?
People use the words loosely. A septic tank holds the waste so solids settle, then lets liquid out to a soakaway. An older cesspit may be a single pit that holds everything. Both need emptying, and both can drain into a soakaway that chokes over time.
Why does my cesspit fill up so fast?
Usually because the soakaway can't drain: it's clogged with sludge, too small for the house, or the ground is waterlogged. Emptying buys time, but the soakaway is the real fix.
Can a soakaway be cleaned instead of rebuilt?
Sometimes. Jetting and pumping can clear a soakaway that's partly choked. One that's sealed with sludge or built too small usually needs extending or replacing.
